Holter monitor (24h)
A Holter monitor is a machine that continuously records the heart’s rhythms. The monitor is worn for 24 – 48 hours during normal activity.
How is the test performed?
Electrodes (small conducting patches) are stuck onto the chest. These pads are attached by wires to a small recording monitor. The Holter monitor, ran on batteries, is carried in a pocket or pouch worn around the neck or waist.
Typical procedures when wearing the Holter monitor
- Individual keeps a diary recording what activities they did while wearing the monitor, and how they felt.
- After 24 – 48 hours, the individual will return the monitor to the doctor’s office.
- The doctor will look at the records and see if there have been any abnormal heart rhythms.
30 Day Event Monitory
A doctor may order 30-day cardiac event monitoring to help an individual evaluate any of a variety of symptoms to determine if these symptoms are related to the heart. These symptoms may include palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, lightheadedness, rapid rates, near syncope or syncope (passing out), or irregular rates. These monitors can also be used to evaluate medication changes or the effectiveness of various cardiology procedures.
