Transthoracic Echocardiogram (ECHO)

What is an adult transthoracic echocardiogram?

During a transthoracic echocardiogram, a technician gathers views of the heart by moving a small instrument called a transducer to different locations on the chest or abdominal wall. A transducer looks very much like a microphone. Its function is to send sound waves into the chest in order to detect echoes that reflect off different parts of the heart.
